Lesson 1: Introduction to the Scientific Method

Objective/s:

  • Students will understand the steps of the scientific method.

  • Students will be able to apply the scientific method to solve simple problems.

Tasks:

  1. Begin by introducing the scientific method and its importance in science.

  2. Provide examples of simple problems/questions and discuss them with students.

  3. Discuss and teach the various steps of the scientific process while providing examples.

  4. Have students work in small groups to solve simple problems using the scientific method.

  5. Finally, have each group share their approach and model of the scientific method based on the problem provided to them.

Lesson 2: Applying the Scientific Method

Objective/s:

  • Students will apply the scientific method to a hands-on experiment.

  • Students will understand the importance of variables in experiments.

Tasks:

  1. Begin by introducing the following common text structures: chronological
    order, cause and effect, problem and solution, and compare and contrast.
    2. Provide examples of each text structure and discuss them as a class.
    3. Give students short passages or articles with different text structures and
    ask them to identify the structure used in each one.
    4. Have students work in pairs or small groups to create their own short
    passages using a specific text structure.
    5. Finally, have each group share their passage and the identified text
    structure with the class.
